Pogonip (Ice Fog) – Full Panorama

Click to enlarge to full, scrollable panorama

Ice fog consists of fine ice crystals suspended in the air. It only forms under specific conditions; the humidity has to be near 100% as the air temperature drops to well below 0 °C (32 °F). The morning of this image, Rolling Prairie, IN was covered with an intense Ice Fog which covered the trees everywhere with crystals.

I’m pleased to announce that the images created at the Orfanato Niños de Cristo for the Orphaned Starfish Foundation won a Silver at the 2010 W3 awards for excellence in photography.

The OSF is a great cause.  I encourage you to go their site, read the stories of the children and help in any way you can – we raise educational funds for 20 orphanages in 10 countries throughout Latin America and Africa.

Thanks to my cohorts at the UXTestKitchen for all their hard work on the website and this project.

HotelAmericana is a series I’ve been working on for some time that brings together my loves of Decaying Architecture, branding and the glow of neon. The design and craftsmanship of this type of signage is slowly disappearing from the American landscape only to be replaced by sheets of fiberglass painted with company logos. Images of signs are nothing new, but I’d like to add my small contribution to documenting a part of traveling across the countryside that is fading into modernization.

I’ll add to this gallery slowly over time – It’s a personal project and I’m not sure if it will be interesting to anyone else, but I hope you enjoy some of the fading craftsmanship I’ve run across while traveling…

Total Solar Eclipse [from the archives]

Eclipse in Totality: Gerlingen, Germany 1999

In 1999 I had the extreme pleasure of traveling to Gerlingen Germany with a small group of Astronomy professionals (including several gentlemen who had worked on many of the Apollo missions for NASA) to witness the solar eclipse in totality.   It was an astounding visual and learning experience.
