Orfanato Niños de Cristo: Faces of Hope win Silver at 2010 W3 Awards

I’m pleased to announce that the images created at the Orfanato Niños de Cristo for the Orphaned Starfish Foundation won a Silver at the 2010 W3 awards for excellence in photography.
The OSF is a great cause. I encourage you to go their site, read the stories of the children and help in any way you can – we raise educational funds for 20 orphanages in 10 countries throughout Latin America and Africa.
Thanks to my cohorts at the UXTestKitchen for all their hard work on the website and this project.

I recently had an opportunity to go to the Dominican Republic to photograph the children at the Orfanato Niños de Cristo (Children of Christ Orphanage).

Coulrophobia [from the archives]
Coulrophobia, the fear of clowns. This is part of a much larger body of work I started (and still have yet to finish).
I was dining with one of my best friends at a local pub shortly after my father died. Someone who knew my father was working as entertainment at the restaurant that night recognized me, came over to introduce herself and we chatted for a bit – she was dressed as (and is) a professional clown. After my father’s friend left I looked across to my buddy, and he was white as a ghost, and had a look of extreme discomfort on his face. I asked him what was wrong, to which he replied, “I… don’t….. like…… Clowns…..”
Prior to that night, I had no idea coulrophobia existed.
The body of work I created afterwards used real clowns, from many traveling circuses and show – I hoped to visualize them in a way that people who fear clowns experience them.
